SoHo/Nolita

History

SoHo and Nolita were once the home to six Indian villages: Warpoes, Sappokanican, Nahtouk, Muscoota, Ispetenga, and Sherakopak. These villages had settled into Soho and Nolita during the 1600s.

In the later 1660s, the Dutch moved into southern Manhattan and one Dutchman named Augustus Herrman bought large tracts of land in the SoHo district. Only after 1775 did more settlements occur in the SoHo district north of Canal Street.

In the 1800s, SoHo took a drastic turn and became the living area of choice for the wealthy. The elegant neighborhood attracted many businesses. Businesses like hotels, theaters, stores, and casinos were brought into SoHo. Imagine 5th Avenue back in the 1800s, and you have SoHo. In the later 1880s, the textile industries settled into SoHo. Not until the 1950s and later on did more artistic and creative types of businesses start to emerge in SoHo and Nolita.
