Greenwich Village

History

Greenwich Village comprises a large portion of Downtown Manhattan. One of the most famous areas of New York City, it has long been known as a bohemian capital of the world. Sandwiched between the Bowery and Chelsea; Greenwich Village has been the epicenter of countless art movements.

Founded by the Dutch; the name Greenwich is an Anglification of the name Groenwijck meaning ‘Pine District. The Dutch cleared the land turning it into pastures. In 1664 the English conquered the region. Greenwich spent many years developing on its own as a hamlet before merging into the larger devolving city. In 1822 the population of the Village boomed as a yellow fever outbreak forced many people to flee to less densely populated areas.

The villages’ reputation as an artistic capital started in 1914 when Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney opened the Whitney Studio Club at 8 West 8th Street. The Whitney Studio Club offered a space where young artists could display their works. In 1924 the city’s oldest off-Broadway theater the Cherry Lane Theater opened in the Village.

Due to the large number of affordable Greenwich Village apartments for rent, poor and struggling artists flocked to the area. This is one of the main reasons The Village played such a prominent role during the beat generation. Later in the 60’s the abundance of Greenwich Village apartments would help the burgeoning music scene; early experimental bands such as The Velvet Underground and The New York Dolls would call the village home and usher in the punk era.

The Village can be seen everywhere as it is often used as a location and backdrop for films and television. For example the exterior of the Crosby’s television home is actually a Greenwich Village townhouse.
