HistoryChelsea gets its name from the house of British Major Thomas Clarke. Clarke took the name from the Chelsea Manor house in London. The house stood on 23rd street and occupied the entire block between Ninth and Tenth Avenues. It was a gorgeous house surrounded by gardens. The term “Flatiron District” is a very recent invention. It began to appear in the mid 1980’s. It was partially spread by real estate brokers who wanted to distinguish the more commercial Flatiron rentals from the more residential Chelsea’s rentals. In the early 1900’s the neighborhood had an influx of Irish immigrants attracted by affordable Chelsea apartments for rent, and the areas proximity to the docks. This era is documented in the film “On the Waterfront”. Chelsea was also an early center for motion pictures. Many silent film studios where located in Chelsea. The Chelsea docks have a rich and colorful history. Many of the survivors of the Titanic were brought to Chelsea and temporally housed in the area. Warehouses along the dock were used to store Uranium for the Manhattan Project. Chelsea was also home to Andy Warhol, he even named one of his film projects “Chelsea Girl” in reference to the post beat generation that was taking up residence at the time. DescriptionChelsea and the Flatiron take up a large portion of Westside Manhattan. The area extends south from Hell’s Kitchen and ends north of Greenwich Village. The lines defining Chelsea begin to blur as it approaches the Flatiron district. The flatiron district is located directly east of Chelsea and continues east until it hits Lexington Avenue. Over the last half century Chelsea and the Flatiron have transformed into a very upscale area. Chelsea is now a high class trend setting area. Its lower class roots are gone becoming one of the more expensive areas of the city. Modern Chelsea is a center for the arts home to theaters, dance companies, and art galleries. ResidentsResident of the Chelsea and Flatiron districts tend to be younger. The area is now considered a very high class and luxurious area of Manhattan Rental HousingRental prices Range from $4.80 to $7.75 a square foot. Due to recent boom of Chelsea real estate apartments are not hard to find. Chelsea is home to many apparent buildings. Flatiron apartments tend to be in old converted buildings making it easier to find studio apartments here. Fun StuffChelsea and The Flatiron are located in right in the middle of the cultural center of Manhattan. The area has also become a world renowned shopping destination. Countless art galleries also make the area their home. Restaurants of every cuisine and price range are abundant. |
