History


Originally, Carnegie Hill served as a piece of farmland owned by Peter Van Ogliensis. The land can be traced all the way back to 1677. A Dutch patent transferred the land to Baron Resolved Waldron, who owned it until 1705. The estate remained unchanged for 50 years and was divided amonst a few of the Waldron decedents. However, much of the land was lost by Adolph Waldron. A merchant bought the land for eight hundred pounds. Sections of the Waldron Farm were eventually sold to numerous people.

Houses were not erected in Carnegie Hill until 1860. Mansions continued to be built in Carnegie Hill, mainly by a variety of brewery owners. After successful entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie purchased land, a different style of home was built on 91st Street. Carnegie constructed elegant mansions that were much different in style than surrounding homes.

Ultimately, Carnegie Hill has been named after a beautiful mansion constructed on Fifth Avenue at 91st Street. The mansion was built by Andrew Carnegie in 1901. To this day, Carnegie Hill maintains its classic elegance in the luxury apartment buildings that have become popular amongst wealthy families.
