HistoryBattery park city stretches for about 92 acres at the southwestern tip of Manhattan in New York City. In military organizations, an artillery battery is a unit of weapons like guns and missiles, grouped in a place to facilitate better battlefield communication. Here, artillery battery was stationed at various times by the Dutch and British earlier and that is how it got its name.The city was planned and constructed in 1970s and 80s by a community which includes Robert F.Wagner Park and the Battery Park City Promenade. Now it is owned and managed by Battery Park City Authority, a public benefit corporation created by New York State Legislature. It issued a fund of 200 million dollars in bonds to facilitate the construction efforts. The first residential building was constructed in 1980. The urban land institute has awarded its 2010 Heritage Award for the Master Plan of the City. The development of the city witnessed a serious set back after the collapse of the twin towers in 2001 and now it has been restored due to the reduced rents and government subsidies. DescriptionThe city is situated at a distance of 8 miles from La Guardia Airport. There are nearly 35 big building in the city, out of which 10 are for commercial purpose while the rest for residential, consisting of supermarkets, restaurants and movie theaters. The residential area is divided into northern and southern section and the southern section is thickly populated, containing Gateway Plaza and Rector Place apartment buildings. There is a high school, Stuyvesant High School.ResidentsNearly 10,000 people live here, out of whom three fourths are whites and the remaining, mixed races of African, Native American, Asian and Pacific Islander, most of them are middle class or higher middle class people having incomes over $100,000.Rental HousingThe rent is at an average of $2500 to $3000 per month for single bedroom houses and it is double for two bedroom apartments. Most of the buildings located here are very large consisting of 20-45 stories built using orange bricks, giving an elegant look. Privately operated parking lots are available along the west street and south street, beneath the FDR drive.Fun StuffThe city contains parks, gardens, playing fields, plazas and walkways, all opened to the public, the place being ideal for taking walking tours, especially in the twilight. Robert F.Wagner, Jr. Park, South Cove and North Cove, West Thames Park, The Esplanade, Rector Park, TearDrop Park are some of them with blooming flowers and spacious lawn. The majestic waterfront and flowering gardens make Battery Park City a lovely place to visit. One can avail the ferry service to reach the Liberty statue. There are also available water taxis and sightseeing boats down the River Hudson. The round trip fare to both Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, $5 for children 3-17 years old, and free to children aged 3 and under. It operated 7 days a week from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. |
