HistoryDUMBO (“Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass”) is a Brooklyn neighborhood located between Fulton Ferry Landing and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. DUMBO is comprised of two sections, one located between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and another which continues east to an area known as Vinegar Hill. DUMBO was one of the New York’s leading industrial areas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its warehouses and factories turned out machinery, cardboard boxes, and a wide variety of industrial goods. During the 70’s, the area’s industries gave way to artists and young homesteaders seeking inexpensive loft spaces for studios and homes. Vinegar Hill got its name from the Battle of Vinegar Hill during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The small village was home to mostly Irish laborers who worked in the area that is presently DUMBO and the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard. DescriptionToday, DUMBO is a destination for craftsmen, artists, photographers and filmmakers who use the neighborhood’s preserved character as an inspiration and backdrop for their work. DUMBO represents a perfect mix of old and new architectural styles-- luxury condos nestled among stately brick warehouses and remnants of cobbled streets and old railway tracks. With its stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and ideal waterfront location, DUMBO has rapidly become one of New York’s most sought after neighborhoods. Vinegar Hill, an area of roughly six blocks, features 19th century Federal style and Greek Revival architecture interspersed with industrial buildings , warehouses and new condominiums . The area still maintains remnants of its past as can be seen in several blocks still paved with cobblestones. ResidentsThe DUMBO/Vinegar Hill community is less than one square mile and is home to about 3,000 residents. The average income in DUMBO is about $180,000, while Vinegar Hill averages $82,000. Most of the residents are single young professionals, artists and craftsmen or young families with children . Residents have a choice of fine public and private schools in nearby Brooklyn Heights, a 10 to 15 minute walk away.
