HistoryBrooklyn was settled during the 1600s by Dutch settlers. It began with the Dutch name "Breuckelen" and has since then become one of the most populated areas of New York. Previous to settlements by the Dutch, the Lenape Native Americans had been settled in the area making up Brooklyn. "Breuckelen" was one of six parishes chartered by the Dutch West India Company. "Breuckelen" was named after a town found in the Netherlands. Brooklyn served as a major area where battles took place during the American Revolutionary War. The Battle of Brooklyn was fought in the area during 1776. It was also the largest battle to take place during the American Revolutionary War. During the early 20th century, vast urbanization took place in Brooklyn. Innovations in the transportation system of Brooklyn brought in many people who would not have otherwise access to Brooklyn. Immigrants were able to make Brooklyn their home. During the early 1900s, many New Yorkers moved to Brooklyn in search of better living opportunities in comparison to other cities like Harlem.
