Ditmas Park

History

Ditmas Park gets it's name from the Van Ditmarsen family, who were sheep farmers back in the 17th century. A century ago Ditmas Park was all farmland. It remained rural until New York City incorporated Brooklyn and the subway system arrived. It was shortly after when developers found their way to Ditmas Park and begin building large Victorian homes that begin attracting the upper class, such as the Gillettes and the Guggenheims. As the 70's and 80's came along, home values begin to decline, as well as the area's reputation.

Description

Today Ditmas Park has officially been designated as a Historic District, due to the Victorian homes that were built in the 1900's and still remain here. Located in Brooklyn, east of Kensington and west of Coney Island Avenue, this historic neighborhood offers quaint cafes, diners and international cuisine, along with art museums displaying work of local artists. The neighborhood is filled with rich cultural diversity, beautiful, unique homes and with the B and Q lines conveniently located for a quick ride to Manhattan, many people are choosing this neighborhood to put their roots down and raise their families. Actually New York magazine has called Ditmas Park the new San Francisco.

Residents

There are approximately 73,405 people that live in Ditmas Park today. This neighborhood has become known as the one of the best places to live in Brooklyn as younger families are discovering great buys on real estate, and these homes offer big yards, spacious living, street-lined trees, parks, restaurants and local entertainment, with easy walking distance to hip bars and clubs. This community is working together on improvement projects and developing a unique environment for all to enjoy. The large Victorian homes are being restored and many have been brightly painted adding wonderful charm to this neighborhood.
