Cobble Hill

History

The Cobble Hill neighborhood was originally settled as farmland all the way back in the 1640s. The Dutch farmers that settled it first called it Ponkiesbergh before it received the Cobble Hill name. It got its name because of the cobble stones that were disposed of in the site. During the American War of Independence and the Spanish-American war the site was used as a fort for the soldiers.

During the 19th century is when many of the buildings were constructed and is what makes up most of the historic district today. The majority of the neighborhood is part of the historic district, which was designated as such in 1969. These older style homes have become very popular on the Cobble Hill rental apartments scene.
