History


Brooklyn Heights is one of the most prominent neighborhoods in the Brooklyn borough of New York. During the 1600s, the Lenape Indians lived in Brooklyn Heights. The Lenape Indians called Brooklyn Heights "Ihpetonga," which stood for "the high sandy bank." During the late 1600s, Brooklyn Heights was settled by a multitude of Dutch immigrants. Brooklyn Heights also played an important role during the American Revolutionary War.

In the early 1800s, the first steam ferry service in all of New York was introduced in Brooklyn Heights. Since then, Brooklyn is renowned for its modern transportation systems. For many years, the Brooklyn Dodgers also hosted their executive offices in Brooklyn Heights. When Robert Fulton created the first steamboat for New York, called the Nassau, Brooklyn Heights grew to immense popularity and fame. Commuters enjoyed the steamboat since it allowed them to commute to and from Wall Street.

When the Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883, it also served as an important part of the history of Brooklyn Heights. Brooklyn Heights became the first suburb of New York as more people were enabled to move to Brooklyn.

In the 1900s, Brooklyn Heights became home to a multitude of famous writers, actors, and musicians. It has become one of the most prominent parts of New York, with a rich culture and great community spirit.
