History


For over 200 years, the resort town that we now know as Brighton Beach, Ny was known as Gravesend. In the mid 1800’s developers wanted to develop beach resorts in this area. These resorts would be used by those that lived in the city, for recreation during the hot, summer months. In 1868 Brighton Beach, NY was established by William A. Engeman . He purchased hundreds of acres of beach property that would be developed into a resort. The name, Brighton Beach, came from the resort town of Brighton, England. Over the years Mr. Engeman developed the land. In 1871 the Ocean Hotel was built, and in 1878 the Brighton Beach Bathing Pavilion and Pier. Another popular hotel, the famous Brighton Beach Hotel, was developed by the board of directors of the Flatbush, Brooklyn, and Coney Island Railroads. This was home to many exclusive clubs, such as the New York Club.

Horseracing came to Brighton Beach in 1879. It was very popular until anti-gambling laws came into effect and was closed in the early 1900’s. The Brighton Pike and mile-long boardwalk was constructed in 1905. It was known for its attractions and entertainment. In the 1920’s developers built a lot of apartment buildings, where the former attractions used to be. The resort town of Brighton Beach became a community of neighborhoods. In the 1930’s and 1940’s there was an influx of Jewish immigrants that settled into this area. These people were affected by WWII and the Nazis. After the war, many Russian immigrants settled into the area.

In the 1970’s the city lost its appeal. Many middle class families moved away, and the town was quite destitute. However, the Russian population was still growing. The immigrants developed the area, gave the area the nickname, “Little Odessa”, and Brighton Beach was reborn. It is still a popular vacation spot for many visitors every year.

There are also many other ethnic neighborhoods. The beach is beautiful, and is very popular vacation spot during the summer.

Travel to and from Manhattan, and other NYC areas are easy with convenient subways, highways, and bus routes.

Brighton Beach apartments for rent are scarce. The average price range for rentals starts around $750 for a studio, and a three bedroom averages $1700. The average price per square foot is $40. Prices jump the closer you get to the beach,.

Brighton Beach is a very ethnic community. Walking through the town, you will fell as if you are in Europe. There are many ethnic restaurants, nightclubs, and markets. The beach is wonderful in the summer and has a great boardwalk. Close to Coney island, there is something for everyone in Brighton Beach.
