Park Slope

History

The Park Slope NY neighborhood was originally occupied by Native Americans. It wasn't until the 1600s that it was colonized by the Dutch who used the area as farmland for over 200 years. In 1776 this area was part of the Battle of Long Island, which was one of the first battles between the Continental Army and the British Army.

During the 19th century this neighborhood was further developed. Several large Victorian mansions were built during the 1880s all the way through the 1890s. These buildings were built to be able to see the beautiful landscape and parks nearby. Most of these buildings today are part of the Park slope historic district. The area continued to grow because of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. It happened to be one of the richest communities within the United States according to the census taken in 1890.

The area kind of died off until the late 1960s when hippies began buying some of the homes in the area and renovating them. This trend continued over the next several decades. Today this area has many Park slope rental apartments as it is a very popular neighborhood to live in.
