Flatbush



 

History


Located in Brooklyn New York; Flatbush was founded by the Dutch in 1651. The area wad originally called Midwood. In 1654 during the first Anglo Dutch war the area was surrendered to the English. Its Dutch heritage remains in its name Flatbush is an Anglification of the name Vlake Bos which means wooded plain. It was incorporated into the city of Brooklyn in 1894. In the 1950’s the famous Brooklyn Dodgers took up residence in Flatbush. Many of the Dodgers were residents of Flat bush. It was a very sad day in 1958 when the Dodgers were uprooted and moved to LA. Many residents still harbor a grudge over 50 years later.


Description



Today Flatbush is composed of mostly working class families with a small percentage of middle class and wealthier residents mixed in. Flatbush runs from the Brooklyn city line north where it meets Prospect Park; the southern portion of Prospect Park is considered to be part of Flatbush. Flatbush has no shortage of transportation options. It takes a half hour to get to Manhattan by train. Flatbush has service from the B, Q, 2, and 5 trains. There are also several bus routes which serve the Flatbush Area; the B6, B8, B23, and several other buses service the area. Flatbush has several elementary and intermediate schools, and uses Erasmus Hall High for high school education. Brooklyn College is located in Flatbush. Church and No strand Avenues comprise a busy commercial area where, shopping is arable at a number of national chains including Old Navy, Target and many more.

Flatbush has approximately 106,000 residents, and 37,000 housing units. Today Flatbush is composed of mostly working class families with a small percentage of middle class and wealthier residents mixed in.
